Students with autism spectrum disorder often demonstrate strong decoding skills but face significant challenges with comprehension. According to the Simple View of Reading (Gough & Tunmer, 1986), this 'poor comprehender' profile describes students who can accurately decode words and sentences but struggle to make meaning from text. Without early and ongoing intervention, difficulties with comprehension can negatively impact learning, motivation, and overall academic success. In this session, participants will explore evidence-based strategies to address the underlying processes that contribute to comprehension difficulties, including language development, executive functioning (such as working memory), inferencing, and comprehension monitoring.
