Shifting the Balance: 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into the Balanced Literacy Classroom (Grades K-2)

“Burkins and Yates skillfully explore ‘balanced literacy’ and ‘the science of reading’ to find the sweet spots where they overlap, connect, and actually complement one another.”
-Susie Rolander, Bank Street College.

Using the book Shifting the Balance authored by Jan Burkins and Kari Yates, we will dive in and consider the research, reevaluate current practices, and embrace new possibilities for an even stronger achievement of balanced literacy. We will recognize the balanced literacy perspective while highlighting common practices to reconsider and revise looking at what’s best for the students in our classrooms. We will build a community of practice around the six shifts. Let's take a day to find small, doable changes around the six shifts as well as learn from each other.
