Navigating the Standards-Based Individualized Education Program (IEP) Process for Students with Dyslexia

Session Information: This one-day, face-to-face training is designed specifically for dyslexia specialists who support students with dyslexia receiving special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The session focuses on how to apply the standards-based IEP process to meet the unique needs of students with dyslexia, in alignment with state and federal requirements. Participants will gain the knowledge and tools needed to: Develop comprehensive Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFPs) based on dyslexia-specific evaluation data and progress monitoring Write measurable, standards-aligned annual goals that address reading and related academic needs Identify when and how to include short-term objectives, especially for students needing intensive, individualized support Collect and analyze data effectively to monitor progress and inform instructional decisions Align all components of the IEP—PLAAFPs, goals, services, accommodations, and progress reporting—to ensure a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) that includes access to evidence-based reading instruction, as outlined in the Texas Dyslexia Handbook (2021 Update) This training supports dyslexia specialists in collaborating effectively within the ARD committee to ensure students with dyslexia have IEPs that are both compliant and instructionally meaningful.
