From Prediction to Proof: A TEKS-Aligned Gel Electrophoresis Investigation

Move beyond Punnett squares and bring genetics to life with molecular evidence. In this hands-on session, participants will model inheritance patterns using monohybrid crosses and pedigrees, then confirm their predictions through gel electrophoresis analysis of a taste-related gene. This workshop directly supports TEKS B.1(D) through proper use of micropipettes and electrophoresis equipment, while reinforcing TEKS (7) and (8) by connecting DNA structure, genetic variation, independent assortment, and inheritance patterns to observable phenotypes. Teachers will leave with a ready-to-implement, inquiry-driven lab that strengthens student understanding of genotype-to-phenotype relationships and builds confidence using required molecular tools.
