Reading and Writing in Social Studies
Grades 4-12

Social studies teachers with all levels of students will learn reading and writing strategies to help their students to be successful in class and on assessments.  The purpose of these strategies is to help teachers effectively engage students with difficult content in their classes.  Teachers will learn successful strategies that target the unique features and constructions of social studies texts as well as other forms of non-fiction, including primary and secondary sources. Critical thinking and critical writing go together to both help students learn and provide evidence that learning has taken place. Handouts provided can be used immediately to modify your social studies instruction.
