Reading Academies Grade 3
The reading academies are designed to implement evidence-based reading academies for Kindergarten through grade 5. The Kindergarten through grade 3 literacy achievement academies will enhance teachers’ knowledge and skills so they can effectively teach students in primary elementary grades to develop reading proficiency. The academies must address effective and systematic instructional practices in reading, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension and the use of empirically validated instructional methods that are appropriate for struggling readers and may address training in effective instructional practices in writing. The grades 4 and 5 reading to learn academies will enhance teachers’ knowledge and skills so they can effectively provide reading comprehension instruction to students in grades 4 and 5. These academies must address effective instructional practices that promote student development of reading comprehension and inferential and critical thinking and the use of empirically validated instructional methods that are appropriate for struggling readers and may address training in effective instructional practices in writing.
