SLO - Student Learning Objectives
Implementation Training

Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) are one of four options to measure student growth for the system. (The other options include a value-added measure for teachers in tested subjects in grades 5 through End-of-Course exams (EOCs); portfolios; and district-level pre- and post-tests.) Districts can choose more than one of those measures, provided that there is consistency throughout the district for a particular grade and subject.

What are SLOs?
SLOs are long-term goals for student learning crafted by teachers and administrators. Often in teams with peer, school and district support, teachers analyze data to determine student needs and devise instructional strategies to meet those needs and improve learning.

The SLO process strives to bring together the varied pedagogical considerations a teacher juggles throughout the year – curriculum, instruction, assessment, adjustment, and evaluation. The SLO process encourages and prompts continual reflection and self-assessment so that teachers can focus on aligning curriculum, instruction, and student performance.

TEA has developed a framework for SLO implementation, including recommended policies and procedures, and will engage participating districts in conversations to refine the framework throughout the pilot period.

Important Workshop Information:

Beginning 2017-2018, the Commissioner's Rules Concerning Educator Appraisal (Chapter 150) requires each teacher appraisal to include performance of teachers' students (student growth measure).  While this system is called student growth, it really is about teacher growth.  The more effective the teacher is in the classroom, the higher the student growth outcomes.

One method to measure student growth is student learning objectives (SLO).  SLOs are about focusing on supporting teachers to meet the learning needs of the students in their classrooms.  The Student Learning Objective Process is a series of questions that, if answered thoughtfully and thoroughly, should lead to improvements in instruction and student learning.

Important Session Information:

This Student Learning Objective's training is for district and campus leadership teams to learn the Student Learning Objective process in order to support implementation of this method to measure student growth on campuses for teacher appraisal. Student Learning Objectives fulfills the student growth measure component of T-TESS.

Two Zoom meetings will be scheduled after this training to facilitate SLO development and coaching skills.
