Understanding the seven principles of government is key to unlocking the complexity of the Constitution and our governmental systems. As one of the most cognitively complex units, and most heavily assessed on 8th grade STAAR, vertical alignment is crucial. In 7th grade, students learn how the Texas Constitution reflects the principles of limited government, republicanism, checks and balances, federalism, separation of powers, popular sovereignty, and individual rights. A deep understanding and ability to apply the learning to a variety of stimuli is paramount for student success in 8th grade.
This session focuses on the principles of government, the Bill of Rights, the amendment process, and the ratification of the Constitution.
