Trauma and stress can alter a youth’s development – physical, emotional, intellectual and brain functions which impact learning, contribute to behavioral problems, and kindle a cycle of violence. Research reports that nearly 50 percent of school age children in the United States have experienced “at least one or more types of serious childhood trauma.” Understanding trauma and its impacts on young learners will help educators better serve the emotional needs of their students, and help trauma-survivors thrive in classrooms. This session will look at how trauma affects brain development and functioning as well as other areas of development. We will also explore types of trauma, mental health disorders related to trauma and ways in support and assist our students and build resiliency.
