They All Grow Up: Addressing Issues of Maturation in Teens and Young Adults with Autism




Building social relationships by making friends and establishing intimate relationships are developmental life stages for all teens and young adults. Puberty and adolescence are particularly challenging because many changes in their body occur, which can be difficult for a students on the spectrum. Education is of particular importance since they do not learn incidentally from their peers. As a result, some may present with inappropriate behavior in friendships and close relationships. Participants in this workshop, will learn the specific challenges present during puberty and adolescence. They will explore strategies and curriculum to help students understand the maturation process, develop boundaries, safe expression, and healthy romantic relationships.
