Information:
An essential part of the LMA is gathering data on the student’s reading efficiency. For many students this can be accomplished by administering an informal reading inventory (IRI). These evaluations (the IRI and the LMA) support and substantiate one another. The purposes of conducting a reading inventory are: to determine reading levels, to determine listening levels, to discover strategies used for word identification, to identify fluency needs, and to discover strengths and needs in comprehension. Additional purposes of the IRI for students with visual impairments are to determine: if reading speed is related to visual or tactual skills; if reading comprehension is related to visual or tactual skills; what font size is needed; if optical aids are needed; the reading distance; and if there is a need for Braille code instruction.
