Mental Health/Safety - PD
Starr Commonwealth Trauma Informed Care and Resiliency in Schools Series

Workshop specifically for Mental Health/Safety.

Important Session Information:

This series on trauma informed schools is on the TEA approved list for meeting the school staff training requirement and is comprised of 3 Starr courses:  Trauma Informed Resilient Schools (TIRS), Resetting for Resilience (RFR), and Healing Trauma and Restoring Resilience in Schools (HTRRS).The first course in the series, TIRS,   teaches school professionals how to create trauma-informed schools and classrooms, focusing on resilience, exploring the core values and beliefs of educators and emphasizing an understanding of how trauma impacts children and their school experience. The course provides detailed information and concrete actions that answer not just the “why” but also the “how” to create the best classroom and school supports for traumatized students and the school professionals who serve them.  No pre-requisite is required.  The second course, RFR, builds upon the TIRS course with a strong focus on understanding the link between private logic and deficits in the Circle of Courage®’s universal needs with student academic achievement and behavior. Participants will learn how to integrate positive behavior intervention supports, rewards, and consequences into their classroom management systems by assessing students and creating behavior support plans for them. Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions and strategies to collaborate with families and communities and to support staff will be discussed.  The TIRS course is pre-requisite. The third and final course in the series, HTRRS takes participants deeper into the brain science of trauma and toxic stress. The polyvagal theory, epigenetics and the science of resilience is explored. The content emphasizes the importance of hope when working with at risk students. Participants learn about the SITCAP® model (Structured Sensory Interventions for Traumatized Children, Adolescents, and Parents) and practice sensory based interventions from a variety of SITCAP® model programs. Experiential activities showcase how to process trauma, nurture, and restore resilience in students of all ages.  The first two courses, TIRS & RFR, are pre-requisites.
