Research-Based Literacy Instruction and Intervention for Grades 5-8

This Research-Based Literacy Instruction and Intervention workshop is designed for upper elementary and middle school ELAR teachers and interventionists.
Important Session Information:
Decades of research related to reading and writing instruction tell us what this teaching and learning should look like. Yet, we continue to see millions of students struggle to learn and thrive in school often due to a lack of literacy abilities and motivation. Why is this? Are we doing all that research says to do? Are we keeping up with what new research tells us about reading abilities, like inference making, or writing skills, like handwriting and text organization? Let’s make sure we all understand what we know from research – both old and new – when it comes to literacy. We will discuss several research-based areas, including: • Understanding how the English sound system impacts literacy and instruction. • Why we must teach phonics, decoding, and spelling explicitly and systematically. • How fluency impacts higher-level abilities like comprehension and written expr
