Session Detail

Next Generation Reading Instruction (K-5)

This session will provide an opportunity for teachers to learn new techniques and strategies to inform their reading instruction.

Important Session Information:

Participants will look at ways to make small but powerful adjustments to instruction that hold students accountable for their own learning as we move from traditional reading instruction. Next generation reading instruction is responsive to students’ needs, and it develops readers who can integrate reading strategies without prompting from instructors. We will explore four instructional contexts- read-aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading - by providing a snapshot of how each structure has traditionally been used to support growing readers and some ideas for adjusting the structure to accommodate the demands of next generation literacy instruction. This session is based on the book, "Who's Doing the Work? How to Say Less So Readers Can Do More" by Jan Burkins and Kim Yaris.
