Reading is Like Baseball? (Face to Face or Zoom)




Kelly Gallagher made the connection between reading and baseball. Although one does not have to understand the strategy and complexity of baseball to truly understand the game, the enjoyment of the game increases dramatically once an observer realizes baseball’s nuances. The same is true for reading. If our students are merely reading the words on the page and not applying strategy to dig into the text’s complexity, they are missing out on the deeper meaning of the text. In this session we will explore strategies to increase student comprehension with difficult texts. We will include Kaplan’s Depth and Complexity elements to help students go beyond the surface level of understanding of their reading and stretch their critical thinking skills.
