AUDIENCE: EDUCATORS IN JUNIOR HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL The Youth Mental Health First Aid USA curriculum is focused on information participants can use to help adolescents and youth ages 12-18. This is an 8-hour public education program that introduces participants to unique risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common to adolescents. This program builds understanding of the importance of early intervention and teaches individuals how to help adolescents in crisis or who are experiencing mental health challenges. Participants will learn to recognize warning signs and initiate help by applying a core five-step action plan.

Important Session Information:

Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.
