Arguing From Evidence in Middle School Science - FREE BOOK!
Share
Secondary science sessions will focus on implementation of the Science TEKS through labs, activities, and various research based strategies.
Important Session Information:
Registration in this session includes a free copy of "Arguing From Evidence in Middle School Science," by Jonathan Osborne, et al. You might think that most scientific ideas are common sense, but many of the concepts we teach in science sound crazy or unbelievable. In the classroom, the scientific explanation often has to compete with students' pre-existing but flawed ideas. This session will use the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning framework to guide students through verbal or written argumentation, perfect for those who ask, "How do we KNOW that?" Students are encouraged to think outside of the box and consider multiple viewpoints before making a claim supported by evidence. The FREE BOOK provided in this workshop includes 24 ready-to-implement, TEKS-aligned activities to engage students in arguments about competing data sets, opposing scientific ideas, and applying evidence to support specific claims. This will count as a 6-hour G/T update credit.
