Writing with Mentor Texts (K-5)

This session will support your use of intentional instruction, gradually releasing writers as they build confidence and independence.

Important Session Information:

Mentor texts are pieces of writing that are read (and reread) to be used as models. They are easily imitated by students and are contained in texts that we love. A good mentor text can serve a variety of purposes because it contains interesting text structures or specific elements of the author's craft. We will explore ways to use mentor texts: to stimulate ideas for writing; provide examples of structures that children can imitate; share interesting sentences, word choices, or writing styles that children can notice and integrate into their writing; and spark writing at any grade level.
