Important
Session
Information:
Students with complex access needs require different types of access to printed materials. Adapted books are traditional books that have been modified by changing the format, including physical alterations to the book itself or in how the information is presented (objects, pictures, symbols, textures, etc.). This is all with the goal of greater levels of engagement for students with cognitive, communicative, and visual impairments while building reading and language skills.
During this session, you will create 1) a traditional, hard-back interactive book and 2) multiple digital books using tools such as PowerPoint, Tar Heel Reader, and Book Creator. Easy, low-tech strategies and tools for improving physical access will be incorporated throughout. You will leave, not only with several adapted books for immediate use, but with the knowledge and skills to create more adapted books for instruction and classroom leisure reading.
