Functional Communication Training
Teaching Non-Verbal Students to Communicate

This training is designed for staff members who are working with non-verbal students who have little to no ability to communicate. These students often engage in problem behavior in order to get their wants and needs met. Functional Communication Training is a research-based intervention that results in a reduction of problem behavior because it teaches the student an appropriate communication response. Following the training, participants will be able to: 1. Identify the common functions of problem behavior 2. Demonstrate a basic understanding of Skinner''s verbal operants and the Applied Verbal Behavior approach to language/communication instruction 2. Select individualized communication responses for their students (e.g., vocalization, sign, picture exchange) 3. Implement Functional Communication Training (FCT) with their students 4. Program for generalization of the communication response

Important Session Information:
The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) will be covered as an option for teaching an appropriate communication response. The instructor is not affiliated with or certified by Pyramid Educational Consultants. The instructor will be training based on the article describing PECS that was published by Bondy and Frost in 1998, other relevant research articles and publications, and her 15 years of experience implementing PECS with individuals with ASD and other developmental disabilities.
