Differentiation in Middle and High School 2019-2020
Strategies to Engage All Learners (TPEP Criterion 3)

Goals: Through readings and group discussions, participants will explore ways to: Understand and define examples of Differentiated Instruction. Create a healthy classroom community that embraces students'' unique qualities. Experience and analyze how DI strategies are used to address individual learning needs. Design differentiated assessment tasks that promote transfer. Anticipate and overcome roadblocks to implementation of differentiated instruction   Agenda 8:00 am – 11:30 am: What is Differentiated Instruction (DI) and what is not DI? How does differentiation connect to brain research, mindset, and motivation? 11:30 am – 12:30 pm: Lunch (on your own) 12:30 pm – 3:00 pm: What are effective planning and instructional strategies that hook students into learning, provide interactive learning experiences, and check for understanding among diverse groups of students? What does “Differentiated Instruction” look like on the Instructional Framework? How might teachers best prepare their classroom and their students for differentiation? What resources are available to support teachers in differentiation? What are potential roadblocks to implementing DI and how might these be overcome? This session adheres to Washington State Teacher Evaluation Criteria 1, 2, 3, & 5.
