NWAESC---Phonics FirstĀ® Basic (18 hours) Classroom Teachers K-2 and Special Ed. K-3

According to the International Dyslexia Association, the principles of instruction and content of a multisensory structured language (MSL) program are essential for effective teaching methodologies. This course, based on the Orton-Gillingham methodology, meets the IDA standards as evidenced by our accreditation through the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC). This introductory course provides teachers with a solid understanding of the basic elements of the Phonics FirstĀ® multisensory reading and spelling program. Course content includes: alphabet and phonemic awareness strategies; the three-part drill for structured review; tactile/kinesthetic spelling techniques for phonetic and non-phonetic words. Participants have opportunities for hands-on lesson practice with other participants. Emphasis is on teaching reading to beginning, struggling and learning disabled readers in primary grades.
