AFESC--Strategies for Managing Challenging Behaviors in the School Setting

Emotion regulation refers to a person’s ability to understand and accept his or her emotional experience, to engage in strategies to manage uncomfortable emotions when necessary, and to engage in appropriate behavior when distressed. When students are unable to effectively regulate their own emotions, then this frustration can escalate into challenging behaviors. Lack of effective emotional regulation can also lead to difficulties with academic performance, peer and/or adult relationships, mental health and behavior problems. This interactive training will focus on practical strategies to teach emotional regulation and address how staff can respond during times when a student may lack these skills. By the end of this training, participants will gain a basic understanding of: • Emotional regulation and problems associated with skill deficits • Implementation of key teaching strategies • Identification of steps staff can use to stay calm and respond appropriately during times of behavior escalation
