NWAESC---Arkansas Educator's Outdoors: Exploring the Illinois River Watershed

Wonder about water? Wanting to connect your science classes to a relevant, local topic of interest and importance? If so, come join us for a hands-on, minds-on two-day professional develop exploring the Illinois River Watershed. We will spend the first day of this professional development session at the Illinois River Watershed Partnership in Cave Springs where we will explore all the resources the IRWP has to offer, coming to a better understanding of the unique features of the Illinois River Watershed. From testing water quality to identifying native plants, we will explore the human impacts on this central facet of our environment. We will also consider how relevant phenomena pertaining to water, our most precious resource, relate to the new science standards. Day Two of the tour features a canoe trip on the Illinois River. Highlights of the canoe trip will include the examining streambank erosion, investigating water quality, exploring riparian buffers for streambank stabilization, world water quality monitoring, and inventorying macroinvertebrates. Each participant will receive their own water-quality test kit they may take with them upon completion of the professional development. The cost includes lunch, snacks, beverages, educational materials, and canoe rental. We would recommend bringing your own water bottle. Participants will need to provide their own transportation each day to our starting points. Day One: Illinois River Watershed Partnership (219 S Main Street, Cave Springs, AR) Day Two: Chamber Springs put-in for Illinois River off Highway 412 (Directions will be provided via email a week prior to PD session.)If you have any questions, please email Virginia Rhame (vrhame@starfishnw.org). We hope to see you in June!
