NWAESC---Phonics First Syllabication and Word Study (Roots and Affixes) for Upper Elementary

Geared toward upper elementary students, this class provides teachers with tools to teach struggling readers both multisensory word attack strategies for multisyllable words and Greek and Latin roots and affixes to aid comprehension and vocabulary. Teachers use syllabication to guide students to systematically break unfamiliar multisyllabic word into small, manageable syllables, identify the vowel sounds within each syllable and read the word. Greek and Latin roots and affixes are explored to facilitate student skill development in reading, spelling, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Teachers learn multisensory strategies to enhance understanding and to engage students in developing a curiosity for our language. This course will provide needed materials and information for meeting the Foundation Skills in the AR Content Frameworks for Literacy for Grades 4-5. The following materials will be provided: Phonics First Syllabication Guide with reproducible student activity pages, Phonics First Syllabication Card Set, Phonics First curriculum Guide, Word Study for Upper Elementary: Greek and Latin Roots Implementation Guide and Structures Card Pack.
