ARESC-Exclusive Screening of "I Am Not Your Negro"

Join the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas on January 13 for an exclusive screening of the Academy Award-Nominated documentary,I Am Not Your Negro. The event is sponsored by AETN and is free to the public. In 1979, author, James Baldwin wrote a 30 page letter outlining a biography of slain civil rights leaders Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.. Although Baldwin's proposed manuscript was never completed, master filmmaker Raoul Peck uses Baldwin's deeply personal notes to jump through time, juxtaposing Baldwin's private words with his public statements, resulting in a radical, up-to-minute examination of race in America. ASC is the only venue in South Arkansas selected to exclusively screen I Am Not Your Negro before its national premiere on PBS. A panel discussion with Dr. John Kirk, author and director for the UALR Anderson Institute for Race and Ethicity, and State Representative Vivian Flowers will directly follow the film. Educators attending the screening and panel discussion will receive a classroom discussion duide and curriculum guide on I am Not Your Negro, as well as primary source class activities specific to the Civil Rights movement within Pine Bluff and Jefferson County. This professional development opportunity is ideal for Arkansas History, US History, Political Science, English and advance placement teachers.
