WDMESC: WDMESC and Harding STEM: Increasing Engagement in the Math Classroom Through Effective Teaching and Learning: Discourse and Student Thinking

This is the fourth of four sessions focusing on the eight mathematics teaching and learning practices as outlined in NCTM's Principles to Actions.  This series was developed in response to regional ACT Aspire test data and will be based on the learning progressions focusing on developing understanding of fractions in elementary to ratios in middle grades through functions in high school.  Each session will provide an in-depth look at two practices and include K-12 tasks to draw connections between the teaching practices and the standards for mathematical practice.  Although each of the four sessions is a stand-alone professional development, we encourage participants to attend all four sessions.

Each session will have the following focus:

Session 1:  Establishing clear learning goals and selecting tasks

  • Session 2:  Representations and Procedural fluency from Conceptual Understanding
