Studies show that 25-30% of high school students are struggling readers who do not meet academic standards or go to on to college, and these students often struggle in the workplace as adults. For most of these students, they did not master intermediate literacy skills before going on to high school (Shanahan, n.d.). This professional development session provides teachers the opportunity to examine the Critical Reading courses standards that address these intermediate literacy skills, as well as participate in sample lessons and planning activities. This session is ideal for secondary teachers who are teaching Critical Reading courses or responsible for any RTI components on their campus.
