According to the National Center for Education Statistics (1998), "Effective writing skills are important in all stages of life from early education to future employment." However, current data tells us that less than 50% of our mid-level students exhibit proficient writing skills. The question now becomes "How can we identify students' specific areas of writing skill deficits and plan effective lessons to support them?" This professional development session provides teachers with the opportunity to answer this question with the help of the ACT Aspire Performance Level Descriptors (PLD) and the Improvement Ideas for Summative Tests document. This will be an interactive day with teachers participating in various writing activities and planning their own lessons based on PLD needs.
