As students are confronted with increasingly complex text, they often struggle to identify the most important information and make sense of what they have read, or they read simply to summarize the content rather than analyze a text for components of craft and structure. One way that teachers can help their students delve deeper into a text is by guiding students' thinking with text-dependent questions and close reading strategies. This interactive professional learning session provides teachers with the opportunity to participate in close reading strategies with secondary-level texts, as well as time to develop their own text-dependent questions with texts of their own. While any secondary teacher is welcome to attend, the texts used and examples offered will target ELA teachers in grades 9-12.
