Typically, we think of teaching as giving students the information we need them to know, then expecting them to properly use this information to solve problems. As a facilitator of learning, we instead present the students with activities that will guide their thinking to the discovery of the information we need them to know, making their learning more meaningful and strengthening their retention. In this workshop, teachers will take part in lessons geared toward this purpose. Blank handouts will be shared at the end of the day via email, google drive, and/or jump drive. Workshop activities include, but are not limited to:
- Discovering why we flip the inequality sign? (7th)
- Discovering the formula for slope (Alg. 1, Geo)
- Discovering quadratic transformations using function notation (Alg.1)
- Discovering the properties of the triangle midsegment (8th, Geo)
- Deriving formulas for the sum of interior and exterior angles of triangles and polygons (8th, Geo)
- Discovering the Triangle Exterior Angle Theorem (8th, Geo)
- Deriving the Distance Formula and the Equation of a Circle from the Pythagorean Theorem (8th, Geo)
- Discovering special right triangle side length ratios (Geometry or Trig)
-
