Typically, we think of teaching as giving students the information we need them to know, then expecting them to properly use this information to solve problems. As a facilitator of learning, we instead present the students with activities that will guide their thinking to the discovery of the information we need them to know, making their learning more meaningful and strengthening their retention. In this workshop, teachers will take part in lessons geared toward this purpose. Blank handouts will be shared at the end of the day via email, google drive, and/or jump drive. Workshop activities include, but are not limited to:
- Discovering special right triangle side length ratios (Geometry or Trig)
- Discovering the leg length of special right triangles when the hypotenuse is 1 (Geo, Alg 2, or Pcal)
- Reflecting special right triangles to find Unit Circle coordinates (Alg 2 or Pcal)
- Discovering vertical and horizontal asymptotes rules including limit notation (Alg. 2, Pcal, Cal)
- Discovering transformations using function notation for varying function families (Alg 2, Pcal)
- Discovering the Intermediate Value Theorem (Pcal, Cal)
- Using secant and tangent lines to discover the limit form of a der
