With constant news headlines about North and South Korea, economic stories about China in the global market, pop culture influencing the world from Japan, questions about gender dynamics central to India and Pakistan, and much more, Asia is an important part of understanding the contemporary world. Dr Paul Crutcher (pacrutcher@ualr.edu), professor at UA Little Rock and site director for the Arkansas NCTA (National Consortium for Teaching about Asia), offers a professional development session focused on learning more about the fascinating histories and cultures in Asia. The session offers pragmatic take-aways for middle and high school teachers, including books, curricular supports, pedagogical tools, and ongoing resources. The session draws from contemporary research in the social studies and ELA, particularly for integrating high-interest children's and YA literature, as well as student-driven multimodal projects, into the curriculum.
