NAESC Life Science Workshop/Cadre
The morning session of this workshop will consist of a lesson emphasizing the use of mathematics as evidence to support or refute a hypothesis. The dry lab provides students with the opportunity to participate in an authentic research activity as they learn principles of genetics. As we work through the lesson we will learn about writing and incorporating 3D formative assessments* at strategic times in the course of the lab with real-time feedback for students. Discussion of how 3D assessment translates to ACT/ACT Aspire goals will be included.
Standards: BI-LS3-3
The afternoon session will introduce a 9-12 STEM lesson grounded in photosynthesis and cellular respiration content. This multi-day lesson has a strong engineering component that encourages students to develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills as they take a deep dive into the carbon cycle. Mitigation of human impacts is also addressed in this systems-based lesson.
Standards: BI-LS2-5; BI-LS2-7; BI-ETS1-1; BI-ETS1-2; BI-ETS1-3
This lesson is intended for high school Biology, but may be adapted for use in upper middle school life science or STEM classes.
