What does effective instruction in social studies look like? This session takes it back to the basics as teachers will learn ways to incorporate primary and secondary sources, inquiry, historical thinking skills, disciplinary lenses, teaching of controversial topics, and helpful tools and resources to reinvigorate their classroom practice. This session will also include tips on how to integrate the latest technology tools to create authentic student engagement. These practices can be applied to any grade level. This session is also beneficial for administrators and instructional facilitators who want to know more about social studies content and best practices. Specific Program Objectives:
1. Participants will gain a greater understanding of how to teach disciplinary literacy skills within the content area by incorporating inquiry, primary and secondary sources, and historical thinking skills.
2. Participants will gain a greater understanding of how to incorporate the latest technology tools to create opportunities for authentic student engagement.
3. Participants will gain a greater understanding of how these best practices can be revised to differentiate for student abilities within the classroom.
