Teaching Writer's Workshop in a Real Classroom

Writer's Workshop format: getting started and staying strong with strategy mini lessons based on Jennifer Serravallo's The Writing Strategies Book.

A. Writing Conferences: When, how and why students need one-on-one or strategy group conferencing...and how to keep up with it without grading all night.  Based on research by Jennifer Serravallo and Lucy Calkins.

B. Structure: How should a writing block be organized to fit-in research based components that are optimal for student growth?  What can be done to differentiate writing and to help the early/late finishers?  Change your paradigm on writing and watch your students fall in love with it.

C. Strategy Lessons: When civilized people eat, they take small bites and enjoy their meal.  This same principal applies to the art of teaching writing.  This session focuses on the mini-lesson: hot to determine what to teach and resources to do so withing the writing workshop model.

D: Getting it Started: Knowing the qualities of the ideal writing workshop model is important, but, when students show-up on the first day of school, how do we get from there to where we want to be?  This session focuses on the planning and procedures needed for a successful writer's workshop.
