In support of the mathematics initiative described in ADE’s State ESSA Plan and to implement STEAM education as an access point for experiential learning and creative problem-solving, The Harmony of Mathematics and Music will provide both mathematics and music educators with evidence-based strategies to address academic standards in both content areas. For example, similar concepts can be presented in the study of rhythm, pattern, time signature, music notation, math symbols, fractions, decimals, and percentages. The Harmony of Mathematics and Music will be a six-hour workshop developed and presented by a music teaching artist and a mathematics specialist.
Although the primary goal of this workshop is to provide educators with new approaches to presenting critical content, the secondary goal of creating a collaboration and prepare the way for future partnerships and for further exploration of the integration of STEM with arts practices and design principles, also known as STEAM education. So that full advantage may be taken by Arkansas educators, the value and knowledge of evidence-based practices in STEAM education will be emphasized.
