SCSC-Using Analytical Reading and Writing to Promote Conceptual Understanding in Pre-AP Science

In this workshop, participants explore how the Pre-AP science classroom emphasizes analytical reading and writing so that students gain, retain, and apply scientific knowledge. Teachers will experience science instructional models and performance tasks that leverage the Pre-AP shared principles of close observation and analysis, evidence-based writing, higher-order questions, and academic conversation. They will then consider how they can apply these principles and strategies to their own classrooms in order to better prepare students to be discerning citizens and consumers of scientific information.

Objectives

Teachers will:

  • Explore how a focus on analytical reading and writing helps enable students to gain, retain, and apply scientific knowledge.
  • Experience and analyze instructional models that help build deep conceptual understanding of scientific phenomena.
