This workshop will focus on the district and school leadership aspects of identifying and implementing a Guaranteed and Viable curriculum. Robert Marzano first coined the term guaranteed and viable curriculum in the book What Works in Schools. This term refers to a very simple but powerful construct. No matter who teaches a specific course or specific content at a certain grade level in a school, students should have the opportunity to learn the same content. This represents the guaranteed aspect in curriculum.
A Viable curriculum refers to teachers being able to teach the content to the level of understanding in the time they have to do so. To establish a viable curriculum, schools should identify the priority or essential standards for each grade level and each content area. The first part of this session will be 8:30-11:30, and the second will be 12:00-3:00.
