The Arkansas State Literacy Standards (ASLS) for 2nd grade recommend instruction in three types of writing: opinion, informational/explanatory, and narrative. This session will address the following: setting up an appropriate environment, building a community of writers, instruction in each structure, mentor texts, and assessment. In addition, part of the day will be spent discussing instruction that addresses two ways students are assessed: 1) writing to a prompt and 2) constructed response to reading.
