GFESC - Teaching From Visual Text: Using Art to Improve Literacy
Improve literacy skills and inspire a love of writing. In this workshop, teachers will learn how to use art to introduce elementary students to elements of literature such as character, setting, and theme; to facilitate secondary students in developing an argument including identifying the implicit and explicit meaning of a text and citing evidence; and all students in discovering the joy of writing. Little Rock teaching artist April Gentry-Sutterfield will facilitate teachers in pre-writing, writing, and revising in engaging and even fun processes. Gentry-Sutterfield has 19 years of teaching experience at every grade level in urban and rural schools. During the school year, she runs Arts Integration Services which contracts with arts organizations including Crystal Bridges to create educationally-rich arts-integrated residencies for students across the state. Join April for a workshop that will get you and your students excited about writing!
