In this one-day workshop, we will explore areas of eudcation law that affect students and teachers and how to avoid the legal land mines that educators often face in the course of their duties. The day will provide an opportunity for interaction and participation in a lively discussion of the topics. Teachers, administrators, counselors and other school personnel will all benefit. Topics include: Free speech rights of both teachers and students - what can students and teachers say?; dress and grooming code issues for teachers and student; can they really wear THAT?
Negligence - will they win if they sue you for negligence?
Search and seizure - what will happen if you search students or take something away from them?
Religion and public schools - can teachers lead prayers?, Can students pray or read the Bible?, Can teachers use the Bible in instruction?
Curriculum and school programs - what about contested books?, Will accountability tests stand up to legal challenges?
