GFESC Online Book Study: Speech to Print 3rd Edition

This book study is designed to teach the fundamental principles and concepts of the structure of the English language. Participants will be able to explain the speech-to-print correspondence system, the aspects of language represented by print, and the ways that meanings are conveyed by words and sentences. Participants will learn the speech sounds of English and how the spelling system works. Further, they will understand morphology (the meaningful parts of words), sentence structure (syntax), and ways that word relationships contribute to text cohesion. The application of language concepts to explicit instruction will be described and modeled throughout the course. Participants are expected to complete many short exercises in the textbook as they master this content.  The content in the book will be a refresher of the information taught in K-2 R.I.S.E.
Educators are encouraged to delve into the concepts of each chapter and discover ways this content should change how we approach reading instruction to match The Science of Reading.  The questions and conversations will create a rich discussion of each chapter, looking especially for how the concepts change what we should do in classrooms and schools.
This online book study will open on June 1 and run through August 7 and completion will provide 18 hours of professional development. Each week participants will read one-two chapters while answering a question regarding the content of the chapters and responding to other participants on Schoology.   One of the greatest benefits of online book studies over the last few years has been the conversations between participants, so responding to other participants’ posts will be required.
