It is imperative that we continue teaching students about “decoding” or “word study” into
the middle and upper grades (3+). To do so means purposeful, systematic, and explicit
instruction in syllable types, big word decoding routines, and syllabification for spelling
strategies. With these tools for approaching big words, big kids will be able to access
the printed word and, in turn, comprehend what is being read. This 3-hour VIRTUAL session will focus on building the knowledge and skill of teachers in order to offer explicit instruction in how to access “big words.”
