DSC Virtual - Physical Science is Fun, Periodically!

The NGSS based Arkansas K-12 Science Standards require a shift in students’ understanding and use of the periodic table. The emphasis is placed on using patterns in the chemical properties of elements to make predictions and construct explanations. In this professional development session, participants will explore ways to engage students to make meaning of periodicity that surpasses rote memorization and allows for students to discover for themselves the underlying patterns described by periodic law. The strategic use of the SEP’s of using models to make predictions, and constructing explanations will provide the engagement required for higher DOK levels. Student discourse will be leveraged to demonstrate its important role in student reasoning and communicating. Participants will discover why High Leverage Practice #16, Explicit Instruction, is viewed through a different lens in the science classroom.
