In response to the state mandate to teach the history and consequences of the Holocaust, the Arkansas Holocaust Education Committee is excited to offer a free half-day workshop that will prepare educators in grades 5-12 to teach this difficult but important material.
Experienced educators from local universities and high schools will offer guidelines for teaching about the Holocaust in historically accurate ways. The workshop includes curated teaching resources and sample lesson plans. Attendees will be able to access classroom-ready lessons and resources based on collections of testimonies, videos and photographs and Holocaust literature recently made available to educators. Facilitators will offer suggestions about how to connect this historical material with contemporary issues.
Whether you're a first-time teacher or an old hand looking to enhance your current strategies, you'll learn about instructional best practices, find inspiration in new teaching ideas, and connect with other teachers faced with the daunting but exciting chance to teach the next generation of Arkansans about this all-too relevant historical event.
Session will be held at Hendrix College, Hundley-Shell Auditorium of the Miller Creative Quad..
This session will be presented by Dr. Kevin Simpson, Dr. Dorian Stuber and Mr. Ricky Manes.
A $50 stipend will be payable after the workshop.
A copy of the book Why? Explaining the Holocaust by Peter Hayes (2018,Northwestern) will be given.
Classroom ready lessons and resources including lesson planning that is age-appropriate to your classroom will be given.
Three professional development credits will be offered through AESC and the Arkansas State Department of Education (ADE).
