This professional development
is designed for teachers who teach a Critical Reading or Strategic Reading
Course. However, all teachers are welcome to attend regardless of whether they
teach those courses or not. Four different professional development days are
offered; however, attendance in all four sessions is not required (but is
strongly recommended).
Participants will:
• Explain how direct instruction in comprehension strategies improves comprehension
• Explain how the gradual release of responsibility model is essential to direct instruction in reading strategy acquisition
• Explain how oral language supports comprehension
• Explain how theoretical models of reading can inform reading instruction and assessment
Audience: Strategic reading Course teachers and Critical Reading Course teachers. However, all middle school and high school teachers are welcome to attend.
