AFESC-Selective Mutism

Selective Mutism is a relatively rare mental health (anxiety) disorder in which children who are talkative at home are unable to speak at school. This is often misinterpreted as an inability to speak at all, or willful refusal to speak. This session will review symptoms, briefly discuss other similar disorders, and debunk myths associated with Selective Mutism. The school staff’s role in helping the child in the classroom, activities to reduce general anxiety in kids and strategies for maintaining progress when the child moves to the next classroom or following holidays and breaks are discussed.
