AFESC-Figuring out Fluency in Mathematics (K-8): Procedural Fluency of Addition/Subtraction

Fluency practice is not a worksheet! So what the heck does fluency mean? In this session teachers of K-8 educators will dive deep into the 21st century definition of mathematical fluency centered on the principles of mathematical efficiency, flexibility, accuracy and appropriateness. Teachers will be inspired to develop a deeper understanding of procedural fluency along with tools needed to shift and connect the K-8 classroom toward a fluency approach regarding addition/subtraction concepts. Educators will dive deep into significant strategies for fluency, progression of relationships to basic fact strategies, engage in a plethora of classroom activities/centers designed to promote procedural fluency of addition/subtraction concepts with rational numbers, as well as come to know assessment tools available for classroom use. In designing a mathematical environment with fluency in mind, teachers will support every student in becoming quantitatively literate with knowledge and power to become skills and confident doers and thinkers of mathematics. Session is based on the research of: --Figuring Out Fluency in Mathematics: Teaching and Learning Grades K-8 by Jennifer M. Bay- Williams and John J. SanGiovanni --Figuring Out Fluency Addition & Subtraction with Whole Numbers Classroom Companion by Jennifer M. Bay- Williams, Rosalba Serrano, John J.
