OUR Identifying and supporting students with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and other prenatal substance exposure

Estimates indicate that about 1 in 20 children meet criteria for a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), although less than 1% are identified and diagnosed. Although alcohol is the most harmful substance for a developing fetus, additional exposures have the potential to multiply the damage caused. Children that have had prenatal alcohol and drug exposure are at high risk for being placed in segregated classrooms, expulsion, and a vast number of secondary conditions, like placement in juvenile detention centers and in-patient psychiatric units. This presentation will teach attendees about the expansive topic
of prenatal substance exposure with a heavy emphasis on FASD as it related to student success.
Participant will:
1. Learn how to identify a child with an FASD in early childhood,
2. Discuss the educational outcomes of prenatal substance exposure,
3. Develop creative means for implementing accommodations, and
4. Understand the neurobehavioral approach and how it can help students with FASD.
